THE BIG WORD

Google SGE in 2024: SEO Revolution or Disaster?

Is Google SGE really stealing traffic from you?

Or is it a saviour that’ll finally help you gain traffic?

For the uninitiated, let’s have a look at SGE:

SGE stands for Search Generative Experience. It’s a new feature from Google that provides AI-generated summaries at the top of search results pages.

These summaries aim to combine key information from multiple sources to create a quick, easily-digestible response for searchers.

It pushes the organic search results down significantly in the SERPs - between 1562 to 1630 pixels according to studies.

This means the first organic result may be pushed entirely out of sight on mobile and require scrolling on desktop.

Will SGE impact you?

Well, that depends on your industry:

Google is constantly striving to provide users with the most relevant and useful content. This is a huge leap towards that.

For example, when it comes to product comparisons, SGE almost never depends on the original product listings.

Instead, they choose UGC (user-generated content) or expert reviews. This will save searchers a ton of time and prevent them from being influenced by biased comparisons in product pages.

So what’s in it for you?

Here’s the big opportunity:

In the pre-SGE era, it’s been almost impossible to beat corporate websites with thousands of backlinks that have been in the game for a decade or more. Even with poor content, these authority sites often have no problems ranking.

Will SGE be the path for smaller websites to stand out with compelling content?

Are we finally entering an era where great content will defeat legacy SEO metrics like backlinks and domain authority?

What do you think?
