THE BIG WORD
Will SEO die in 2024?
2023 has been the most chaotic year for SEO. The rise of AI followed by a string of Google updates led to unprecedented volatility in SERP rankings.
ChatGPT has been a god send to get direct answers quickly. Something search engines are notoriously bad at.
So it didn’t take a lot of time for it to surpass the likes of Bing and Duck Duck go.
Google’s response in the form of Bard is yet to catch up with ChatGPT but Search Generative Experience or SGE did improve user experience.
SGE is AI-generated summaries by Google, combining the best elements of top articles for a given query.
These summaries appear prominently just below the paid ads section in search results, much to the dismay of many website owners, for example:
Some studies indicate that this will reduce organic traffic by up to 25%.
To make things worse, GPT helped spammy marketers publish low quality articles with the click of a button. Google had to respond with a string of updates to combat this.
The result? SERP volatility like we haven’t seen before.
Websites relying on organic traffic got caught in the crossfire, rising one day and tanking the next.
But, there’s always good news for people writing great articles that add value to readers!
Recent research conducted by leading institutes has shed light on how AI-powered search will look like in the near future. The study indicated a decline of corporate website dominance in SERPs and possible penalization of practices like keyword stuffing.
On the other hand, using citations, quotes and statistics seemed to boost rankings of smaller websites in this experiment.
Put bluntly, if you can write well-researched and valuable content, you will be rewarded.
This means that AI can actually end the monopoly of old websites that rank no matter what and make search engines smart enough to look beyond factors like keyword-stuffing.
To me, it sounds like true democratization of search rankings.
Quality content will rise to the top of SERP results and even if ChatGPT gets better. Google has an edge as it can:
Provide multiple perspectives
Create accountability for authors
Keep information up to date
So is SEO dying for the 1000th time?
No. But SEO as we know it is coming to an end.
