THE BIG WORD

2024 Predictions: AGI? GPT-5? Open Source AI?

2023 was wild. 2024 is about to get wilder.

No. AI is NOT stealing your job.

But it might be stolen by somebody using AI. We’re here to ensure that you are that “somebody”.

So, what’s in store for 2024?

An all out corporate war for AI dominance.

Microsoft with OpenAI have an obvious lead. Anthropic’s Claude is not too far away. Meta is trying to lead the Open Source movement. Can Google catch up?

Google demoed Gemini last month - their hyped up answer to GPT. The demo was marred by exaggerations that made them look a tad bit desperate.

Though it beat OpenAI on a few benchmarks, studies claim that it is not even as good as GPT 3.5 Turbo - OpenAI’s free version.

Big Tech wars aside, let’s see what the people want.

Sam Altman - the people’s “Entrepreneur of the year” asked the world what they’d like to see in 2024 from OpenAI. These were the responses:

The most popular expectations were GPT-5 and AGI.

Considering the competition, GPT-5 is a no-brainer. The question is how much of a leap will it be. Folks like Bill Gates are skeptical and feel Open AI has hit a plateau.

AGI?

Forget about it. At least from OpenAI’s side. The man himself admitted it:

I’m looking forward to the most disruptive one on the list - Open Source LLMs becoming mainstream!

Open Source LLMs are already cost effective when it comes to scale. But it’s never been comparable to GPTs.

2024 could be the year when it catches up to the likes of Open AI. Even if GPT-5 turns out to be beyond expectations, if open source LLMs can be as good as GPT-4, that’s good enough for the majority.

This year, content teams should focus more on how to adapt to AI-powered search engines and specifically Google’s SGE (Search Generative Experience).

As we discussed in the last post, AI-powered search engines will continue the trend of prioritizing quality over the legacy and “authority” of websites.

Keyword stuffing will (fortunately) be a thing of the past. Using citations, quotes and other trust signals will be the new “ranking hacks”.

The downside? SGE will steal a lot of the organic traffic and this is something you need to be ready for.

It’s a great time to diversify your content and own your audience instead of relying on algorithms made by Big Tech.

My advice for 2024: Start a newsletter.
